And standing there, sweaty in a way that felt unearned, I did the math everybody my age eventually does. This is a guy who has finished two Ironman triathlons and multiple marathons, in what suddenly felt like a past life. Maybe that version of me was past glory and I just needed to accept where I am at. Maybe you get one window, and mine had quietly closed while I wasn’t looking.

And then, last week I ran 10 miles without stopping.

This blog is about the thing that lives in the gap between those two mornings. This took me fifty years to figure out and I am still learning. My goal is to inspire you when it is easy to stare at the end of the driveway and say to yourself, “It’s not my day, I will go back to bed and try again another day.” Because it’s the space between the daunting end of the driveway and successfully finishing that 10 mile run that is truly make-or-break for the retirement you want.

THE SETBACK NOBODY WARNS YOU ABOUT

Somewhere around your late forties or fifties, the story changes on you. For most of your life the trend line points up. You get stronger, you earn more, the account grows, and you don’t have to think too hard about any of it. Then one day you look up and the defaults have flipped. Muscle starts leaving on its own (Side note: Did you hear creatine can give you muscles after 50 without even working out? Amazing! There is a pill or powder for everything. LOL) The retirement account you meant to get serious about is smaller than it should be. And the runway, the part nobody says out loud, is no longer infinite.

That’s the moment I know a lot of you are in. Staring at a 401(k) balance the way I was staring down that driveway, doing the quiet math, half-convinced the best days already happened.

I don’t have a tidy motivational quote for that feeling. I was living in it four weeks ago.

WHAT ACTUALLY TURNED IT AROUND

Here’s the part I didn’t believe while it was happening: the boring reps were working the whole time.

The first month back was rough sledding. Lots of walking. Lots of wondering. Nothing about it felt like progress. And then one ordinary morning, ten miles in, it just clicked. The engine came back. Not because of one heroic effort, but because I’d quietly stacked a month of unglamorous, half-walked mornings on top of each other without quitting.

Nobody gets ripped from one workout. Nobody gets funded from one good month. It’s reps. It’s showing up when the showing up doesn’t feel like it’s doing anything.

Your money works the exact same way. Every automatic contribution is a rep. Consistency beats intensity, in the gym and in the spreadsheet. And the encouraging part, the part I want you to sit with: the window is closing, but it is not closed. Effort still moves the number. It just won’t wait forever.

That’s the whole idea behind getting financially ripped: train your money like you train your body. Strength for the retirement you actually want.

WHO THIS IS FOR

I’m not trying to build an audience. I’m trying to gather a few people who are ready to get back up.

If you’re ten or fifteen years out from retirement and quietly worried you missed your shot, you didn’t. You’re just at the part of the story where it’s tempting to walk. I’ve been coming here twice: once with my running shoes on, and now with you.

We call ourselves Risers. It’s the right word. Not because we never got knocked down. It’s because we’re the ones getting up. Rocky Balboa had it right: it’s not about how hard you hit; it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward.

A few things you should know about me up front, since we’re going to be spending time together. My priorities, in order, are faith, family, and fitness (the physical kind and the financial kind). The money and the muscle aren’t the point; they’re in service of the people I love and the life I want to live. I’ll show you my reps, including the ugly ones. And I’ll never pretend I’ve got it all figured out from some mountain top. I’m in the gym and the spreadsheet or the budgeting app right beside you.

More of my story will come out as we go. I’m not going to dump it all in the doorway. For now, just know that everything I’m going to share with you, I’m currently living.

So, two mornings. One where I almost quit, and one where it clicked.

Most of the good stuff in life happens in the space between them. Let’s go get it.

Stay ripped. 💪

-Paul

Thanks for reading! be a run.
<div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" And standing there, sweaty in a way that felt unearned, I did the math everybody my age eventually does.
